Come Prepared
Skaters are expected to wear a jacket, gloves, and stretchy fitted pants. Jeans and the like will not be permitted as the material tends to limit a skater's range of motion when attempting to execute certain moves. Baggy pants are also not permitted as the instructor must be able to see whether the skater is properly bending or locking their knees depending on the element. Students with hair below their chin must tie hair back and out of their face. Although, helmets are not provided by the rink, beginner skaters are welcome to bring a helmet from home if they wish.
Arrive On Time
Skaters should arrive to the rink 10-15 minutes prior to their scheduled lesson time in order to pay for their ice time, purchase rentals, and lace skates before stepping onto the ice to meet their instructor.
Defensive Skating Techniques
First-time students are introduced to figure skating by first discussing the basics of important skating etiquette and defensive skating techniques with their instructor. Skaters will learn the proper way to fall down, stand up, keep their eyes open for other skaters, and who has the right of way in terms of skating 'traffic.' These skills are vital to safe skating and avoiding serious injuries to yourself or others prior to ever stepping on the ice.
Level Assessment
Skating level will be assessed at the conclusion of the first lesson. If the skater appears to excel through the basics, they will be immediately placed into a higher level accordingly. Beginning levels tend to be passed fairly quickly (within approximately 6-12 weeks), while intermediate-to-advanced levels can take anywhere from a few months to well over a year. In truth, there is no set standard. All skaters work at their own pace. However, skaters will see the most improvement if they follow-up their weekly lessons with at least twice the practice time.
Little Ones
Youngsters should expect a fun day filled with engaging learning games such as Snowball Fight, The Driving Game, Red Light/Green Light, Simon Says, Follow the Leader, and more! The instructor also welcomes beginner skaters to occasionally bring a small stuffed animal to use during their lessons. The instructor will not hold the hands of little ones or allow them to hang onto the wall once they have been helped onto the ice. This method of teaching encourages confident independent skating from the start and does not .
Adolescents
The instructor will spend the first several weeks breaking down basic elements. As your child begins to master these elements, they will graduate to more advanced levels and will eventually adopt the skills to play learning games such as PacMan, Would You Rather?, Skateopoly, Tic-Tac-Toeloops, and more! As the student continues to progress, they will gradually compose a plan to achieve short and long-term goals with the guidance of their instructor. The student will eventually be introduced to performing, competing, and testing Free Skate and Moves in the Field. However, recreational skaters of all ages are still welcome to take lessons!
Teens & Adults
Teen and adult skaters will be eased into figure skating at their own pace. The first several weeks will be spent breaking down basic elements. As they begin to master these elements, they will graduate to more advanced levels and will gradually compose a plan to achieve short and long-term goals with the guidance of their instructor.
